It’s officially Fall! While we are still experiencing some hot days; the mornings have been a nice, low 70 degrees. With the arrival of cooler temperatures and favorable thermal conditions, the sky is filled with birds riding the currents as they make their incredible journey to their next destination! These past few weeks alone have been filled with incredible sightings, such as the appearance of five Bald Eagles. While Broad-winged Hawks are still the most commonly seen, Cooper’s Hawks sightings are rising significantly. In addition to these amazing Raptors, there have been multiple sightings of Dickcissels, with forty spotted in one sitting! Not only is there an increase in birds, but we have also seen an incredible number of visitors joining our wonderful counters to see these species. You, too, can join us on October 5th for our annual Hawk Watch Celebration from 10 am to 1 pm, where we will celebrate 28 years of research at Smith Point! It is a free event and no tickets or registration is required, so bring the whole family!
