GCBO Receives Grant from City of Quintana
The City of Quintana awarded GCBO a $25,000 grant for upkeep of the Quintana sanctuaries including the Neotropic Bird Sanctuary and Xeriscape Park in January. This money will be used to upgrade trails and repair water features. Many of the trails need a new base of crushed granite or concrete to allow for easier handicap access and to elevate them from flooding. The water features require constant upkeep as well. The remainder of the funds will be used to support GCBO general operating costs. Thank you City of Quintana for your support!! 2017 New Board Members
With each new year, the GCBO Board of Directors elects and adds new members to the operating board to replace those whose terms have reached their limit. We are pleased to announce that Allan Berger, Jan Cato, Tom Morris, and Tom Taroni will begin serving three year terms this month. They bring years of conservation experience to the organization and each has a passion for our mission. We know great things are in store for GCBO and look forward to an energized year for the birds! It was with a heavy heart that Reba turned in her resignation in January. Over the last several months family responsibilities have overtaken her ability to keep up with work here at GCBO and she made the difficult decision to leave us. We are most grateful for her work over the last year and a half and she will be greatly missed by the staff! Invasive Species Update
Work has begun on the project to remove invasive plant species from our headquarters property. On the 19th & 20th hard working volunteers marked between 1,800 and 1,900 plants with flagging tape. Warren Pruess is heading up this project and conducted training on plant identification both days prior to heading out into the woods. In addition hundreds of small saplings were pulled up since the ground was wet. Pete’s photo from the 20th does not reflect the cold rain on the 19th. More work days will be scheduled to begin the cutting and treatment. Native understory plants will be planted following the removal work. This is a long term project so watch for announcements of upcoming work days. GCBO Receives $25,000 FLNG Grant

Lamar street. The remaining funds will
be used for GCBO general operations.
Obtaining general operating funds is one
of the most difficult things we do but
is critical to allow staff to pursue the

Our wish list is still shrinking! Thanks to George and Judy Vogel we received a load of crushed concrete! A few more loads would really help us out. Monthly Bird Banding at GCBO
Last month we caught this beautiful Blue Jay. They are always a hand full as you can imagine. In February there may already be a few birds moving through so you never know what we might catch. Bird banding will be on Saturday, February 18th from 8:00 until noon. Remember, the birds get up early so the earlier you are here the more you'll see. Seeing birds in the hand is a great way to get kids young and old excited about wildlife.
